Up to a certain point in this story, I was able to relate to Amie. First, the fear of going to another country, where the culture was different from one's own. Second, the real "culture shock" is not going to such a country, but it is returning to your own culture after you've been away for a while. You expect the other culture to be different. But when you return to your previous life, you now see it through different eyes, your priorities in life have changed after seeing the poverty and other circumstances other people in the world live.However, I have not lived the terror of being an expatriate in a country torn by civil war. Travelling into countries where armed guards partrol the borders was terrifying enough. Having to survive when being considered a criminal would be more than terrifying.
This book is well-written and brings the life of the African people to life. It shows the extremes in how people react to the conditions. From horror to acceptance. And it makes you wonder how much "right" others have to try to change the way people other than ourselves live. When, if ever, is it appropriate to intervene in the name of "humanity"?

This was a terrifying thriller story of a young couple who went to Africa for the husband’s job. He was to start a new factory to provide fresh water. While there, his wife found other Americans in a sort of country club, and learned about having servants, as this was expected of them since whites were considered extremely wealthy. Americans could afford a maid for very little money, and it aided the poor blacks and gave them a home as well. Amie did her part with charity work at a local school and against experienced advice even considered adopting a child. But suddenly, disaster struck. Rebel forces attacked and she was taken prisoner while she rushed around trying to find her friends and husband. Her story of what happened next will expand your world view and give you insight into how others live.
I kept wondering if this was a true story since it is so well written I thought it might be. It is a novel, but Clarke has lived in other countries including Africa and so tells a convincing tale. She is a skilled storyteller and has created a very likeable character in Amie, though her friends and family back home don’t understand how she can deal with the cultural differences. There is room for a sequel as not all the loose ends are wrapped up by the end of the story. If there is, I would love to read it.
An exciting prologue draws the reader into this novel, though the story itself takes a while to catch up. Meanwhile the protagonist is frequently annoying as she complains about her life. But soon she’s on her way to Africa where “if Amie thought she was going to have an easy life… she was very much mistaken. In her wildest dreams, she could never have imagined the challenges she would face.”
There are certainly many challenges that Amie will have to overcome. First there’s just the change from England to a whole new continent. The author offers a very convincing and well-researched depiction of African life and logic, inviting the reader to see through different eyes. But just as Amie begins to settle, the cracks begin to form.
A trip back to England offers that ex-pat belonging-nowhere feeling so familiar to me. But will Amie have the chance to make a new home there? Fearsome adventures, exciting challenges and complex coincidences ensue in the latter part of this book, bringing the reader back to that jail cell of the prologue and the terror inherent there. There might be a few too many coincidences overall, but it all makes for an exciting read.

Wow, when I started reading this today, I had no idea it was going to consume my every free moment. I finished it today. Amie was so relatable, so real, so brave, so beautiful a soul. I simply had to know what happened to her before bed. Imagine starting your life with your new husband with all the average dreams and then finding out he has a job offer in Africa. Exciting. Terrifying. Life altering. So much more. I was immersed in the culture, seeing it perfectly through Amie. This was really stunning deep point of view immersive writing. I became one with Amie.
As you might imagine when she arrives things aren’t entirely what she expected. Some are. Some are better. Others worse. She makes a connection with the peace of the place, while still wanting to help with the tragedies. In nature she finds a new perspective but amid the people she defines herself in ways that were beautiful and unexpected. What starts as slow tension when she is put in uncomfortable situations spirals out of control and goes places I never imagined. Amie is my hero. While most things tied up nicely there are threads I’m so curious about. I can’t wait to get back into her world and see what the future holds.
